COOK COUNTY SHERIFF'S POLICE DEPARTMENT COMPLETES INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION -- CASE REVIEWS ARE CLEARED AND CLOSEDNO FACT OR EVIDENCE SUGGEST NEED FOR CRIMINAL COMPLAINTThe Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department has completed its independent case review of two deaths that took place in Schiller Park. They were asked to investigate the 2000 death of Mary Kolodziej and the 2008 death of Lorraine Michalski.
The independent investigation was initiated by Barbara Piltaver, who was the Village President of Schiller Park at the time of the request.
Previous investigations by the Schiller Park Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner concluded that Ms. Kolodziej’s death was an apparent suicide. They also concluded that Ms. Michalski’s death was due to an accidental overdose.
After a thorough investigation, the Cook County Sheriff’s Department concluded that no amendment to the original Cause and Manner of Death findings be made and that there was no evidence to support a criminal complaint in either of these deaths.
The Sheriff's Department noted some investigative procedures that the Schiller Park Police Department could improve upon. Many of these suggestions, which pertained to procedures that were used in 2000 and 2008, had already been implemented prior to this investigation. The Schiller Park Police Department appreciates the observations and advice of the Sheriff's Department, and we thank them for the comprehensive review of these cases.
The Cook County Sherriff's Department's complete report, as provided to the village, can be read at the link below.
