SUBJECT: SAFETY OFFICER - INCIDENT SCENE
DATE IMPLEMENTED: June 1, 1997 REVISED:
PURPOSE: To provide for the assignment of a Safety Officer to incidents of a box
alarm or greater.
Each
member department shall provide an incident scene officer for any incident
requiring a box alarm or greater.
a.
The Safety Officer may be
assigned from within the
department handling the
incident, or
b.
The Safety Officer may be
requested through NORCOM on the box
card assignments.
In either
case, an immediate and timely response is required by the assigned safety
officer.
QUALIFICATIONS
OF SAFETY OFFICER
1.
Fire
Department Safety Officer shall be certified by the Office o the State Fire
Marshal's Division of Personnel Standards and Education as a Fire Officer 1 or
the equivalent as stated in NFPA Standard 1521: 103 equivalency.
2.
As
provided in NFPA Standard 1521 A-2-1.2 and A-2-1.5, additional personnel may be
needed to assure the availability of an incident scene officer. To accomplish this, several assistant safety
officers per department may be needed.
These assistant safety officers may assume the responsibilities of the
incident scene safety officer.
3.
Qualifications
of an assistant safety office:
a. An assistant safety officer shall be certified by the Office
of the State Fire Marshal's
Division of Personnel Standards and Education as a Provisional Fire Officer 1
or the equivalent as stated in NFPA Standard 1521: 1-3 Equivalency.
