Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ)

Safe drinking water is federally mandated and regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as the 2004 Illinois Plumbing Code (Sec 890.1110). A reduced pressure zone (RPZ) device is designed to prevent the reverse flow of polluted water from entering the “potable” (drinking) water system.

All potential or existing cross connections in commercial and residential properties must be protected by the installation of a proper backflow prevention device. Some examples of these include a lawn sprinkler systems, swimming pools, hot tubs, outside faucets, and boilers.

Currently, the Building & Safety Division has been proactive and created a record of all backflow prevention devices in the Village in order to ensure compliance with plumbing codes.

To install a RPZ, here are the steps in acquiring a permit:

  • The homeowner must obtain a permit from the Village before installation begins. Fill-out a Building Permit Application as well as a Plumbing Supplement form. Please submit both documents to the Building & Safety Division. To access the forms, please click here and here.
  • The work must be done by a licensed professional of the homeowner’s choosing. Additionally, all contractors must be licensed with the Village. To receive a Village license, contractors must fill-out a Contractor License Application form and pay a fee to the Building & Safety Division. To access the form, please click here.
  • Once you have received a permit, your plumber may begin installation of the RPZ. Once the RPZ has been successfully installed, you must contact the Building & Safety Division and schedule a final inspection.
